The Blackbird&#8217;s performance and operational achievements placed it at the pinnacle of aviation technologies developments in the course of the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p>This Blackbird accrued about 2,800 hours of flight time during 24 years of active service with the U.S. Air Force. On its final flight, March 6, 1990, Lt. Col. Ed Yielding and Lt. Col. Joseph Vida set a speed record by flying from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., in 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 20 seconds, averaging three,418 kilometers (two,124 miles) per hour. In all, 2391 aircraft have been constructed, the first 692 machines by Fairey Aviation and the remainder below licence by Blackburn Aircraft Company at their works at Sherburn-in-Elmet and Brough, Yorkshire. In service the Blackburn-built aircraft became unofficially recognized as &amp;quotBlackfish&amp;quot. Probably the most outstanding aspect of this very distinguished aircraft was its longevity. <\/p>\n<p>Even though by all regular requirements it was already obsolete at the outbreak of WW2, it confounded every person by remaining in operational service throughout the complete of the war, and thereby gained the distinction of becoming the last British bi-plane to see active service.
