How can we produce shoes in a way that relies on short, local chains of supply and an open production line?
AnOtherShoe is a long-term research project towards new ways of producing, consuming and designing. Eugenia Morpurgo and Sophia Guggenberger have developed an experimental open production line for custom-designed shoes. An open online production platform with laser cutting and 3D printing facilities enables the user to download shoe designs and assemble their own designs from separate parts. If a part becomes worn out in use, the shoe owner can “print” a new copy in a local workshop/FabLab and so repair the shoe. AnOtherShoe also presents a concrete case study for the detailed development of new business models. The project demonstrates the challenges and possibilities inherent to the future short-chain production of shoes and other products.
During MANUFACTUUR 3.0 Eugenia Morpurgo and Sophia Guggenberger are organizing a workshop on 1 & 2 December for students at the LUCA School of Arts, C-mine campus, Genk. The workshop focuses on new models and the further refinement of existing shoe designs.
